Dr. Altina grew up in Nevada, where she brought home every creature that she managed to get her hands on—she’s been passionate about keeping pets healthy ever since her earliest days. Dr. Altina was only eight years old when she decided that she would one day become an animal doctor! Now, she’s the chief veterinarian and owner of her very own animal hospital: Acadia Veterinary Clinic and Pet Rehab Centre here in Saskatoon.
Dr. Altina was still in high school when she began an online program to study veterinary technology, allowing her to work as a Veterinary Technician during her undergraduate studies—her training even provided her the opportunity to administer veterinary care on a short-term missions trip after her first year of classes! Next, Dr. Altina relocated to Pullman, Washington to begin working as a Tech at Washington State University’s veterinary college before gaining acceptance into veterinary school.
After working in a number of clinics around Saskatoon as an Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Altina knew that she would like to open her own practice in order to lead the field in medical and technological advancements—when the opportunity arose for her to purchase Acadia Veterinary Clinic, she didn’t hesitate! Now, Dr. Altina has been serving the area’s pets and animal owners for more than 14 years. She’s particularly fond of reproduction work, ultrasound, and acupuncture therapy, but her favourite part of the job is getting to know pets and their families over the years.
When time permits away from the office, Dr. Altina enjoys horseback riding, camping and hiking, cooking and baking, quilting, gardening, canning, and spending time with her family and pets. She and her husband, Mark, live on a farm east of Saskatoon; her son, James, is a member of the United States Navy and is currently stationed in Virginia, while her daughter, Tressie, lives here in Saskatoon. At home, Dr. Altina shares her life with four horses—Chili, Bree, Doc, and Ronan—as well as three Rottweilers named Bane, Tonks, and Hermoine; a rescued dog named Lyca; and a pair of cats who go by Gracie and Ziva.
