Surgery

Are you feeling nervous about your pet’s upcoming surgery?

Bringing a family member in for an operation is never easy, regardless of whether they happen to have two legs or four. At Acadia Veterinary Clinic & Pet Rehab Centre, we want you to know that we understand what you’re going through because we’re pet owners, too. Each member of our team has experienced the unease of surgery with our own animal companions. That’s why we go out of our way to ensure that every procedure performed in our clinic is as stress-free and safe as possible. Rest assured that your companion one will be in excellent hands with us and treated like one of our own pets.

Pre-Surgical Care

Our process begins with thorough preoperative screening. This helps us to uncover and prepare for potential concerns so we can reduce the risk of complications for your pet. We’ll also develop a strategy for keeping your best friend comfortable and pain-free — before, during and following surgery. We use the safest, most effective pain control medication and customize our approach to each individual patient based on their age, breed, and previous medical history.

Your Pet’s Surgery

Whether it’s a routine spay or neuter, or a more complex procedure, your pet’s surgery is our highest priority. From the moment you arrive, we will be there to ease your mind and help keep your pet calm and relaxed. Any last-minute questions you have will be answered as we get your companion settled in and prepared for surgery.

Once safely sedated, our team will complete the procedure as efficiently as possible. As the doctor works, our dedicated support staff will be present at all times, assisting with surgery, and closely monitoring your pet’s vitals. Our surgical suite is outfitted with modern monitoring equipment which helps us track your companion’s vital signs and pain levels while they are under anesthetic.

Discharge and Post-Surgical Care

When surgery is complete, we gently relocate your pet to a secure kennel with a blanket and heating pad to keep them comfortable as they recover. As the anesthesia begins to wear off, our staff will be there to offer comfort and reassurance, and provide additional pain medication to control any lingering discomfort. We want to make the experience as calm as possible. When you arrive to pick up your pet, we will go over the aftercare instructions specific to your pet’s procedure, including a plan for pain management, follow-up appointments, and surgical site care.

Some of our patients may need an e-collar, also called a cone, to prevent them from disturbing their stiches. We know that the e-collar can be uncomfortable and even stressful for some pets, so we also carry an alternative known as “after-surgery wear”. This fabric gown is sized onto your pet’s body with secure ties at the top to effectively cover the surgical site. After-surgery gowns are comparable in cost to e-collars and come in all sorts of sizes and fun colors.

Surgery doesn’t have to be a source of anxiety, especially if you’ve got the experienced, compassionate team at Acadia Veterinary Clinic in your corner. Contact us today and let’s discuss how we can help with all your companion’s surgical care needs.

Orthopedic Surgery
At Acadia Veterinary Clinic & Pet Rehab Centre, we offer in-house surgical care for complex operations, including orthopedic procedures. Our corrective orthopedic surgical services are available to address a wide variety of conditions and injuries affecting the bones, ligaments and joints. Whether it’s an acute injury, such as a fracture, or a chronic condition, such as hip dysplasia, we’ve got you covered. Should the assistance of a specialist be warranted, we’re happy to provide a referral or arrange for a specialist to perform the surgery at our practice.

Soft Tissue
The term “soft tissue surgery” refers to any surgery that isn’t related to bones or joints. These procedures can range from routine elective surgeries, such as spays and neuters, to those that are much more complex. As with any surgery, the team at Acadia Veterinary Clinic strives to deliver the safest, most effective and most pain-free experience possible. Whatever your companion’s surgical care needs, you can count on our experienced, compassionate team.
